General research areas are biogeochemistry, soil chemistry and soil degradation of natural and semi-natural ecosystems. Specifically the research is focused on:
soil and water degradation by acidification (Alewell et al., 1997, 2000b, 2001; Alewell, 2001) and erosion (Alewell et al., 2008, 2009; Schaub and Alewell, 2009; Schaub et al., 2009; Meusurger and Alewell, 2008, 2009).
nutrient cycling and nutrient depletion of soils and forest ecosystems (Alewell et al., 2000c, 2001; Alewell and Bredemeier, 2006, Conen et al., 2006)
reduction processes in soils and freshwater wetlands (Alewell and Novak, 2001; Küsel and Alewell, 2003; Alewell et al., 2006; Alewell et al., 2007a; Paul et al., 2006).
interaction of uplands and wetland soils within landscapes, with consideration of the influence of material leaching from the upland areas into wetlands and riparian zones as well as the buffering effects of wetlands and riparian zones to water bodies (Alewell and Novak, 2001; Küsel and Alewell, 2003; Alewell et al., 2006; Paul et al., 2006; Alewell et al. 2007a)
mercury emission between soils and atmosphere (Fritsche et al., 2008a, b, c).
Scientific tools used range from classical soil analysis, modelling and statistical approaches (Alewell and Manderscheid, 1998; Alewell et al., 2004) with a special focus on stable isotope dynamics (Alewell and Giesemann, 1996; Alewell and Gehre, 1999; Alewell et al., 1999, 2000a; Vieten et al., 2007; Conen et al., 2007, 2008; Alewell et al., 2008, 2009; Schaub and Alewell, 2009; Schaub et al., 2009).
